Children’s Summer Reading Club

We are so excited  for our Universe of Stories Summer Reading Program on Monday, June 17th through Friday, August 30th .    This free program is for anyone beginning at 9 months who is a resident of North Tonawanda, Wheatfield, or Pendleton.   All children registered in our program will keep a record of the activities they do and the books they read.  This year, they will have an opportunity to win special prizes, and be entered in our raffle.  They will be able to earn points in our weekly “Universe of Stories” game beginning Monday, June 24th.   They can redeem these points for a special prize at the end of the program in August.  As members of the club, young  people will  receive 1 free paperback book of their choice.    Enjoy our special “Recreation Celebrations”!  On Wednesday, July 10thfrom 12-1:30 we will  hold  our “Trucks Rock!” Program which will feature opportunites to see fire trucks, police vehicles and large trucks from our North Tonawanda Fire, Police, and Department of Public Works, and then attendees will be invited into the library to enjoy a Special Snack.  Story Hours, guest speakers, movies, and contests will be held throughout the summer for all. To close out our summer, come to our final  Charlie the Inventor Show and Hot Dog Picnic.  The Party will be on Monday, August 12th  starting at 5:30PM and will be followed by the Hot Dog Picnic and Ice Cream Social under the stars at 6:30-7:30PM.  Come on into the library, log onto our website,  or call  for more information.

FANCY NANCY:  Ooh-la-la!!  You’re invited to a Fancy Nancy Party at the Libraryon Saturday June 2nd from 1-2 pm.  This program is open to young ladies and gentlemen ages 4 & up.  Listen to a Fancy Nancy story, enjoy a very fancy snack, and make a fancy craft.  Dress in your fanciest clothes.  Remember to wear your glamorous accessories.  Registration is required in person or by phone.  This program is open to children who live in North Tonawanda, Pendleton, or Wheatfield.

teen volunteers.jpgYoung people entering grades 6-12 who are looking for something to do this summer may volunteer as part of the Junior Friends program at the Library.  As a Junior Friend, young people can volunteer to: read to younger children as a Book Buddy, sign-up for a weekly shift in the Children’s Department to assist with the Summer Reading Club game, help children on the computers, or assist at programs. Our Annual Parade will be happening again this year and we will require many extra Junior Friends to help coordinate this activity.  We will also need parental involvement for this program.  There will be a mandatory informational meeting for all Junior Friends on Thursday, June 7th at 3:45 – 5 pm.  If at all possible, be prepared to stay through the duration of the meeting, which is usually between 5 and 5:20.   Bring $5 to the meeting and you can buy our Junior Friends t-shirt “uniform” that is being sold by the Friends of the Library. Please discuss any meeting conflicts with Mrs. Stutzman prior to the June 7th meeting. Registration for this meeting is required in person or by phone.

dogjumping.jpgAMERICAN GIRL’S CLUB- Children in grades 2 and up may join us on Thursday, June 14th from 4-5:15PM.Meet Sandy the lab and Creeker the retriever.Watch the dogs perform freestyle agility tricks.Enjoy interactive play with the dogs.Take home a surprise gift from each dog.In honor of Flag Day the dogs will be wearing red, white, or blue; you can also wear something in those colors.Bring a blanket because the dogs will be performing outside if the weather is nice.Bring something for show and tell, such as your American Girl doll, any other doll or something special to you.Registration is required in person or by phone. Open to children who live in North Tonawanda, Pendleton, or Wheatfield.

Picture87.jpgTEDDY BEAR SLEEPOVER:  Did you ever wonder what teddy bears do at night?  Drop off your teddy bear or any other stuffed animal to spend the night in the Children’s room at the Library.   Drop off date is Friday, June 15th between 9:30AM and 5:00PM.  You may pick up your animal between 9:30AM and 5PM on Saturday, June 16th.   If you come anytime between 1:30 and 3:00PM on Saturday, June 18th, you and your animal friend may enjoy an ice cream together.  Pictures of the sleepover will be on the library’s website (www.ntlibrary.org, click on Kids Stuff), or on our Facebook Page after Tuesday, June 21st.  Registration is required in person or by phone.

dremabigread.jpgDream to Be… is the 2012 Summer Reading Club at the North Tonawanda Public Library.    Fun “Nocturnal” and other adventures will start on June 25th  and run through August 18th for any child, 9 months through grade 9, who is a resident of North Tonawanda, Wheatfield, or Pendleton.
All children registered in this free program will keep a record of the books they read (or have read to them).  They will be able to earn points each week in our “Goodnight Moon” game.   They can redeem these points for a special prize at the end of the program in August.  As members of the club, young people will receive 2 free paperback books of their choice and a free Wendy’s Jr. Frosty treat certificate after reading just one book.
Enjoy our special “Summer Celebrations!”  On Tuesday, June 26th, we kickoff our club with Jeff Musial’s Nickel City Reptiles and Exotics at 1PM.
On Wednesday, July 18th, Enjoy Magic and Fun with Charlie (the cowboy) and Checkers (the Clown)at 1PM.
To close out our summer Come to our final Dream to Be… Event which includes our annual Hot Dog Picnic with Special Guest Hawk Creek Wildlife Center and their Talk on the Wild Side Show.”   The Hot Dog Evening Extavaganza on Thursday, August 9th starting at 5PM will be followed by an Ice Cream Social under the stars at 6:15-7:30. Adult Summer Reading Program weekly prize drawings will end on Saturday, August 11th at 2PM.  Story Hours, guest speakers, movies, and contests will be held throughout the summer for Dream to Be… members.

He keeps audiences involved with his in-depth knowledge and keeps them smiling and laughing with his witty comments and “fun facts” on each of his scaly, furry and feathered friends.   Bring the entire family to this educational and entertaining program.  No registration is required for this free program.  Weather permitting, this program will be held outdoors, so bring a blanket or lounge chair.  For more information, call the library.  “This program is supported (in part) by Federal Library Services and Technology Act funds, awarded to the New York State Library by the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services via the Nioga Library System.”

heartanimal.jpgCome to the Library on Saturday, February 11th, for a Valentine’s Craft.Children may come to the Children’s Room anytime between 10am and 4pm and make a sweet heart animal to take home.  Children five and under may need a parent’s help. Austin and Sandy.jpgJoin Sandy and her handler at the library on SATURDAYS, FEBRUARY 4TH AND 18TH AND SUNDAY,FEBRUARY 12TH from 2-4:30 P.M..  Children in Grades 1-6 may practice their reading skills and make a new friend by reading aloud to a certified therapy dog.  This is a great opportunity for children who are reluctant readers, reluctant about dogs, or just love to read and be with our friend, Sandy!  This time includes a flexible 15-minute break for Sandy. You may sign up for a 15-minute session by calling the library, or e-mailing rstutzma@nioga.org with the child’s name, grade, and phone number.

Anyone in Grades 3 and up may join us for our Winter Break Guitar Hero Party at the Library. We’ll enjoy the Guitar Hero Playstation game. This could be your chance at STARDOM! Refreshments will be provided.  It will be held on Wednesday, February 22nd from 12:30-2P.M. Puss-in-boots.jpgJOIN US FOR “WINTER BREAK AT THE MOVIES” on the Big Screen at the Library on Friday, February 24th at 3PM.  A story about the events leading up to the sword fighting cat’s meeting with Shrek and his friends.  This movie is Rated PG for some adventure action and mild rude humor.  It is 1hr., 30min long.  This program is open to all ages.  Parents, please accompany children under 12.  Popcorn will be served.     No registration required.  For more information, call the library or e-mail rstutzma@nioga.org.
